So if you’ve been following along for any time now you know that I love my essential oils…borderline obsessed you may say. I try to get my oily fix in any way I can throughout the day. I diffuse it, use it topically and ingest it. I want to address the ingestion method used here.

As we all know from grade school science, oil and water DO NOT MIX. So you may be adding your essential oils to water and notice that the oils just sit at the top or only coat the inside of your glass. By the way, you should ONLY be using glass! And if you, like me, enjoy fun straws these stainless steel straws are amazing!

Here is a simple way to protect your mouth and throat, and create an “emulsifier” for your water/essential oil consumption:

Simple syrup recipe:

  • 1 Cup Water
  • 1 Cup Organic Sugar

Boil these two ingredients together until about a cup of the concoction remains. At this point you can combine 1 teaspoon of your simple syrup with 2 drops of your essential oil (see below for suggestions). Then simply combine ¼ to ½ of that concentrate in a glass of water immediately before drinking to get the flavor of essential oils without risking damage to mucus membranes or excessive consumption of any given oil.

Now let’s talk essential oil ingestion…

The first consideration is that the oils should be of the highest quality! The second thing to consider is your oil selection…what essential oil will you be ingesting in your simple syrup concoction? We want to keep our focus on the safer oils which are already ingested on a regular basis in the average diet. More specifically, it means we are going to stay with some citrus favorites. If you’ve already been squeezing several lemons or limes into your water or if you bake with lemon or orange zest or peel then that is a good indicator that’s where we should start.

So my recommendations for essential oils to add to your water are:

  • Lemon
  • Lime
  • Orange
  • Grapefruit
  • Tangerine

So the question arises…Is it safe to add essential oils to your water? Well yes and no. Use common sense in the matter and don’t start experimenting with oils that are out of the safety guidelines. Waters flavored with essential oils can be delicious and refreshing when done correctly!

Love to you all!
